KLUFTI

Characteristics

  • Stratified fracture aquifer
Klufti allows the generation of any number of horizontally trending lithological layers. These orientations and distribution of the fractures can be individually specified for each layer.

  • Multi layer concept
For the purposes of the multi-layer concepts, in addition to bedding planes single (C), intra (A) and multilayer (B)-fractures are generated.

  • Dominant flow paths e.g. along bedding planes
By activating the cluster algorithm, which filters out specific fractures that are not connected to other fractures and thus do not affect the large-scale flow behavior, it is possible to represent the dominant flow paths along bedding planes.

  • 1D- and 2D- fracture element generation
Generation of spatially and stochastically distributed fracture elements.

  • 2D- and 3D- mesh generation
In contrast to a variety of other generators on the market KLUFTI is able to generate two- and threedimensional finite element meshes which are connected to the fractures.

  • Coupling with SPRING
Together with SPRING unprecedented opportunities for modeling in fractured rocks are opening up.

  • Interface to the visualization software TECPLOT

  • Script control with extensive parametrization

  • Advancing front-algorithm for generating 2D finite element meshes

  • Calculation of the outflow-effective cluster

  • Free choice of the number of node levels to be generated

  • Exponentially and lognormally distributed generation of the side lengths

  • Normally and exponentially distributed fracture apertures

  • Possibility of the imposition of discrete fractures

  • Generating any number of layers with individual fracture directions and -densities

Input Data

The necessary input data for the stochastic fracture generation must, of course, be collected in the field. This can be done in several ways. If there is a corresponding access to appropriate walls, there is the possibiliy of scanline measurements, which can be done with relative little effort.

Scanline-Measurements

Along several long as possible and different oriented horizontal and vertical lines all fractures are covered that cross these lines. For the subsequent geostatistical analysis is at least the collection of the spatial orientation of the fracture area, the length of the section trace of the fracture with the wall and the distance of the fractures to each other necessary. Additional metadata e.g. impregnations or fillings of the fractures may also present important information for the hydrogeological interpretation of the data.

Fracture orientiation

After the evaluation of the main directions the selected fracture orientations can be represented in a Schmidt' mesh. Essential for the modeling is the determination of center vectors of each cluster and their respective spherical deviation.

Average length of the sectional traces

The lengths of the sectional traces along the wall are evaluated by clusters. It is sufficient to calculate the arithmetic mean. For the later stochastic generation the sort of distribution function must be known. Therefore, the sum curves of the average track lengths are adjusted with the help of mathematical functions.

Average fracture distance

For the average fracture distance between the fractures of a cluster, the arithmetic mean is calculated as well. Similarly, the empirical distribution curves of the average fracture distances are adjusted by mathematical functions, too.

Average fracture aperture

The apertures of the fractures could be measured along the scanlines with a sensor. But the so collected data are not representative because often occur signs of release along the exposure. Instead, results of tracer tests are consulted to determine the average fracture aperture.
